Fiber

There are several kinds of fiber. Water soluble fiber helps control blood sugar levels and cholesterol. Insoluble fiber softens stool, which helps move it through the body in less time. Lignan, a fiber-like substance, has mild anti-estrogenic activity. Where is it found? Fruits (not fruit juice) and beans are high in water soluble fiber. Vegetables and whole grains are high in insoluble fiber. Oats, barley, and psyllium contain both soluble and insoluble fiber. The best source of lignan, by far, is flaxseed—not flaxseed oil, regardless of packaging claims to the contrary.

In what conditions might fiber be supportive?

  • constipation
  • diabetes
  • diarrhea
  • hemorrhoids
  • high cholesterol
  • high blood pressure
  • high tri-glycerides
  • irritable bowel syndrome
  • kidney stones
  • peptic ulcer
  • premenstrual syndrome
  • weight loss and obesity
